Premarital Step 2

2. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers."

In the remainder of this verse it explains the difficulty of two people with different identities to dwell together in unity. It is like dark and light trying to co-exist. Although their intentions may be the greatest, it just will not happen. Either darkness will prevail or it will be light. He also uses the contrast of good and evil trying to co-exist. This too is impossible. Either the good will try to prevail over the evil or the evil will try to prevail over the good. But it is impossible for the two to exist without sucumbing to their intinsictive nature to conquer the other in order to fulfill its identity and role as good or evil. In the same way there are impossibilities that will arise in your marriage if one of you is a follower of Christ and the other is not. As Christ calls the believer to obey Him in all things, and place Him and His rule at the core of the believer's identity, there will be times this is in oposition with the other person if they are not a believer. This becomes a delimma in that Christ would expect you to love Him before your spouse and choose to obey His Word over your spouse. Thus a chain of decisions that will either lead you to compromise against your own conscience, living in guilt and confusion, or it will bring about a series of divisions and lonely choices made against one another. We do not wish this kind of confusion or division upon any marriage. We too as a church are subject to Christ and see this as one of the most important decisions you will make as a couple. We deeply urge you to wait to be married until you share the same spiritual priorities. We feel strongly about this not because of legalism, but due to the love and passion we have to see marriages obtain the best opportunity for success and persevering longevity in the joy and richness God promises to those who obey Him. Because of the strong emphasis on the authority of God's Word (The Bible) over us at Calvary Boise and its forbidding of a believer and an unbeliever marrying (due to reasons stated above), we at Calvary Boise cannot marry a believer and a nonbeliever together.
